28th June - eye test

My yearly check for glaucoma. When Phil told me he had it and I found out that one of Dad's sisters had it I mentioned it to a an optician and they arranged an assessment with the hospital. I've been going ever since initially on. 6-monthly basis and more recently yearly.

Its a different doctor I see today. He says that Phil's condition puts his brothers and sisters at high risk. However, he does a couple of check and one of them, a new one to me, says that I have a thick cornea which takes me to low risk and kinda negates the high risk from Phil.

Glaucoma, in case you don't know, is where the eyeball pressure builds up. It then starts squeezing down the optic nerve and eventually you could lose yur sight. Phil puts drops in his eyes to alleviate the pressure and he has also had an operation to reduce the pressure. So the problem is manageable but its worth checking on yourself  if someone in the family has it.

I'm given the all clear and a new date for next year.

I stop off in Debenhams to check out jackets but don't see any I like but end up buying a pair of shoes and a pair of boys. I actually looked at he boots and thought that they looked OK. God! my fashion sense must have got switched on! Maybe my brain got confused when I turned 60 and thought it was 16!

Meet up with Phil after stopping off in Mark & Spencer's for pastrami on rye sandwiches, crisps and a carton of apple juice. We have lunch and head off for a couple of beers. We chat about stuff and generally catch up with each other. Did you know:
- water gets denser at 4 degrees C so it drops to the bottom of a lake as it gets colder. This means that the lake will freeze from the top down and that wild life will be the last thing to die when a lake freezes?
- a cup of boiling water will freeze more quickly than a cup of room temperature water if they are put into a freezer at the same time?

Its amazing the stupid things that we collectively know!

Back home, Marian's class with Mimi is overrunning. She is making a prom dress fo nxt week but the zip has broken. They have to take it out and put in a newone. So it takes a it of time. The BBQ is slightly delayed and I do some bits and pieces around the garden whilst I wait.
