27th June - Chelmsford meeting

I'm off to Chelmsford for an Essex-wide meeting today. We're all looking into how to handle employees connecting their own equipment to the Council network. Its called BYOD - Bring Your Own Device! Very imaginative. I think they should have called it DIY. Literally do it yourself. We do loads of navel contemplation: can we do it, should we do it, what happens if we do it, what happens if we don't do it, how do we support it, do we have a policy.......boring, boring, boring! The technology is there. It is clear that it is there. It is inexpensive. We have to bite the bullet and do it. Bring it under control and make sure we understand what's connected to our systems. Otherwise people will do it behind our backs. They're already doing it and our systems are getting leaky. I bump into some of my ex-collagues from Chelmsford Borough (now City) Council: Steve, Elaine, Kerry, Tony and Martin. Good to see them and to get some gossip on the old place!
