Start the day in a meeting with Cherie and the rest of her managers doing some navel contemplation on customers, service and what we can do to improve our service delivery. Ho hum!
I'm due in London tonight to meet up with ex-BT friends. Stop off on the way down there to meet up with Pascale in Chelmsford. We meet in a pub near the station where I treat her to lunch. She's on her course tonight and drinking coke but I can have some beer! We chat and catch up then head off different ways.
On the way I look at the progress on the Olympic village - going well and the place looks good.
I'm early so go to my usual place for a haircut. I worked here more than 30 years ago. Its a part of London that has a lot of memories for me. I especially love the buildings - it doesn't matter where you view them from the tower blocks always look two-dimensional!
Afterwards a leisurely stroll up to the pub to meet my friends. I like this street when its sunny. I pass St Luke's church - this was a building which was condemned when i first worked here - the church got damaged during the war but they never pulled it down. They eventually bolstered it and made it into a community centre. We saw Pascale play in here when she was at the Guild Hall.
At the pub there are already a couple of people there. When i first left BT I came up with the idea of starting an investment club. The idea was that we would meet on a regular basis and invest a fiver a month and have the investment as common ground for conversation given that the bulk of us were leaving BT and needed common ground. I needn't have bothered. We had plenty to talk about and the investments ended up being a hindrance. We have long since ditched the investments and meet purely for the pleasure of being together.
Its just a small group of us tonight: Les G, John A, Pete and Kathy (plus me). There were 18 to start but Kevin and Martin are now gone and we are down to 16. On a goodnight we could have as many as 12 but its normally 7 or 8 with the occasional guest turning up.
On my way back home I fancy breakfast (its 10pm!) So stop off at a cafe near the station. Rather flash and the breakfast and hot mug of tea hit the spot nicely.
Back home in good time. I read some more of my book before hitting the sack. Its bloody good and very gripping. I'm going to have to take a break form this story before I get too obsessed with it!

The blog post hasn't published the pix I the order I put them up. You'll have to guess which caption relates to which pic.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't tell. except for the church. Which is the Olympic City then?
ReplyDeleteI like the building with the bits jutting out over the street. very cool!
I think your ex-BT lime is also very cool.
gorgeous quality of light in these photos...what time of day was it?
No 2 is Od St looking back at the steeple of St Luke's with no 3 looking immediately along the same street in the opposite direction.
ReplyDeleteNo 4 and no 5 are the flats in Barbican. This is opposite the building I worked in when you came up to Canterbury uni. We got pissed in a pub around the corner.
No 6is the Olympic site. The weird structure is a tower by Anish Kapoor (I think) and the structure on the left is the main stadium.
The pics were taken about 6pm I sh on my Blackberry phone - most of the pics are from the phone.
