I'm now on part 1 of Book 3 in the Game of Thrones collection of books. I'm immediately enthralled and am sorry to be in the office so quickly.
Bump into Vasily on the way into the town centre. He's a Rumanian who I said hello to on the train a few months ago and he has kinda adopted me. I think he wants to use me to help him get some work. He plays an accordion in the town square every Friday, has a sick wife, suffers from hepatitis c and doesn't want to go back to Rumania cost he gets such good medical treatment over here. Oh! And he doesn't speak any English so can't get a proper job. I'm serious I don't know how I pieced together all this stuff about him as he has less English than I have Rumanian!
In the office I have my first complaint about the lights. I go and sort it out. One of the girls in the team tells me that the sensor doesn't work very well for her when she comes in first thing in the morning and she has to dance around underneath it to get it to work. I suggest that she puts some Latin American music on at the same time and she could get some free Zumba every morning. Another says that her pole has been stolen and she can't do any pole dancing!!! So I have to ask and am told that she used to have an uplighter lamp but it was taken away! Oh well. Takes all sorts I guess.
I get a report that there is a water leak. Check with Steve and he is aware and dealing with it. I then get told by one of the IT team that there is water in the server room, the air conditioning has tripped off, the heat in the machine room is rising and the fire suppressant has been released in the room. I go to the room to find that the leak has originated near to it and water has got into the room. Luckily, the fire suppressant has not been released but the rest of it is a real issue. There are electricians all over the room, mopping out the water and the false floor is up. We are very lucky and the machines are all still working. I don't know how we have managed to get away with this. Apparently, a plumber connected up the water to the pipes on the second floor and made it live. The pipes over the machine room were cut off some years ago and left untapped. The water then started pouring out of the open pipe and no-one noticed for some time. I can't believe this s@@t.
I get a pic from Meech via the Blackberry network of her 'bus' coming to pick her up. It looks like a glorious day in Antigua. I take a snap our our cold, grey, overcast day so she can get a taste of our weather. I certainly prefer hers at the moment. She checks on the Fedex documents she sent and it shows that they were delivered and signed for by our neighbours (they've been left with us by the time I get home).
Back at my desk I re-draw the programme. We're 6 weeks late and there is nothing to be done about it. I report to Chris, my director, and he asks that I write to the two main councillors and Allan our Chief Exec. I also write to our colleagues in Essex CC who are due to move into the building in in April. This won't happen as the earliest it will now be available is late May.
Oh well! Its done. I've chucked the stone in the pond. I'll see what ripples come back next week.
Head for home only to find that the connecting train is running late. Just when I was looking forward to a quiet beer before dinner. At least it's the weekend.
