Good journey in today with some glorious cold crispy weather for company. I've started reading a new book - the 2nd in the Game of Thrones series. I was very impressed with the first one and this one is already looking promising! Fully rounded characters, glorious imagined world, politics, real baddies, ambiguous good guys and loads of twists and turns. Can't wait for my train journeys!
Into the office and get stuck into emails. Come across the first set of nonsense from the guys who are installing the windows. They're complaining about not getting paid. For the hundredth time I write to them to explain that they won't get paid unless:
- they tell me that the windows have been completed
- that we have checked the windows and signed them off
- they provide an invoice for the work that has been signed off
Fairly simple but they just don't seem to get the message. I exchange emails on three occasions with them. I've learnt that phone calls are not good enough, I need to have a 'paper trail' as I've discovered they're likely to 'forget' what has been discussed and agreed. We are now documenting all meetings and following up all conversations with notes of the conversations.
Having got that out the way, they then get in touch to say that they have built the patio doors for the internal courtyard but they can't get them into the building through any of the doors. They're too big! You would've thought that they'd assemble them in the courtyard but its too late as they have already built them. Idiots! They have now come up with the hare-brained idea that the doors be lowered into the courtyard using a crane. Mad! The courtyard is clad in scaffolding so that they can install the windows! There's no way that we can do what they're suggesting. And they want us to pay for it! As if! I get in touch and tell them that we need a meeting on site. I think that this horse is going to run and run!
My unit gets an internal audit. Deep joy! Trudy volunteers to help me and ends up driving the meeting. Still can't figure out why she lacks confidence in her abilities. I often 'big' her up and point out her good points and skills but she seems to lack self-belief. Oh well, horses and water come to mind. Its probably what makes her so good.
We get a pass mark but I think that I'll get some actions coming out of it.
Marian picks me up from the office. We've got the 10 crates that we couldn't get into the car on Friday to pick up. Load them in with Doug's help and head for home.
Quiet night in front the telly. I play on this machine at the same time and write this blog.
